Interesting history. I started voting in 1973. I voted for Ella! It will be interesting to see what the margin is after the Tuesday election. Worth looking at and critiquing.
To be honest, I was a very young, inexperienced voter back then but because of the women's movement of the time, having a woman as my Governor was probably why I voted for her. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the politics in our state back then as much as I do now but I do remember the state was in big financial trouble.
Also remember how she handled the Blizzard of 78. I worked for the UI at the time. She closed all the roads down so crews could start the cleanup. We were back and running in a few day.. So many stuck cars all over the place. I was saddened when she was diagnosed with cancer and resigned.
I voted for Lamont again on Monday. We need his steady, measured hand to guide us through the next 4 years as this country battles against Trump destroying our country everyday. I don't believe Elliott is ready for the enormous job of being Governor during this time in our country. Hard to imagine him handling situations like Sandy Hook, hurricanes, blizzards as well as our financial issues, nominating judges, hiring an administration etc.
A woman winning a governorship in 1974 was a genuinely big deal. Reagan gave her the Medal of Freedom after she died. Makes you wonder what the rest of that career looks like if she didn't get sick.

Thanks, Janet. What did people think of Ella at the time? Seemed like an amazing person. Force of nature?
